The top of the pedestal beneath the circular top mounted with a brass plaque engraved: The Wood / of which this Table is made, / was brought from India, / by / Lieutenant James Lewis Fitz Gerald, / of His Majesty’s Ship Melville, / bearing the Flag of / Vice Admiral Sir John Gore // He perished / in a very heavy Gale, with the whole of his Boat’s Crew, / on the Evening of the 30th April, 1835, / in Algoa Bay, / in endeavouring to rescue a Man that had fallen / from aloft; and also his friend / Lieutenant John Gore, / who had previously jumped overboard to save the Man. // This plate is inscribed by his afflicted Father Rear Admiral Sir Robert Lewis Fitz Gerald K.C.H. / February 1836. / W. overall very good condition; the top with minor scratches and bruises; one or two minor restorations to beaded edge of apron; minor knicks and chips to bottom edge of veneers on tripartite plinth; the underside of the top with a small fillet to one age crack
