the reverse of one inscribed in ink:  1754 –  Mr. Dickson of Capel St. Dublin brought painting of birds & flowers (bapo ochivo[?]) into great fashion.  They were done in water colours upon large sheets of card paper—twelve made the set & were painted for him by three youths of considerable merit—the eldest James Riley; Gustavas Hamilton, the son of a Clergyman; & Daniel O’Keeffe eldest brother to the Dramatic poet –
Not examined out of frames.  Later framed and matted.

Condition

In good condition with some minor cracking to gouache; some slight wear and loss to paint; some small, occasional marks and spots; not examined out of frames.

Catalogue Note

The present lot contains a pair of the ‘Goldfinch’ from the 1755 set.  The 1755 set was Dixon’s last before his departure from Dublin, and was the only set that he reserved from liquidation in early 1756.
