Catalogue Note

Other garnitures of this ground color, model and decoration include one from the Jaime Ortiz-Patiño collection, sold Sotheby’s New York, May 20, 1992, lot 31, and another from the collection of Madame Jules Fribourg, see Svend Eriksen, Early Neo-Classicism in France, London, 1924, plate 242.  Eriksen describes another identical set from the Erich von Goldschmidt-Rothschild sale (Berlin, March 23, 1931, lot 206) with Sèvres date letter for 1769. Such vases à monter were produced at the Sèvres Manufactory from around 1764 and were purchased primarily by the marchand-merciers, such as Poirier, who fitted them with their ormolu mounts.
