Description

  • 73cm. high, 65cm. wide, 47cm. deep; 2ft. 4¾in., 2ft.1½in.,1ft. 6 1½in.
each rectangular top with a hinged compartment, enclosing fitments for inkwells and pens, above frieze drawers on turned and reeded tapering legs with brass caps and castors

Condition

Both of these elegant tables refinished, one table with shrinkage cracks to the top and water stained. Minor marks and scratches consistent with age and use.

Catalogue Note

A design for this type of table appears in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Books, dated 1810, and is described by Gillows as a `Chamber writing table', (No.344/144, p.11, Westminster City Archives). A closely related example to the present tables, stamped GILLOWS LANCASTER is illustrated in Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, 2008, 2 vols., Vol. I, p.300.
