Catalogue Note

Volumnia and Veturia, the mother and wife of Coriolanus, were sent by the Romans to plead with him to withdraw the army of the Volsci, which he was commanding, from the outskirts of Rome and not to attack the city.  Ralph Holland's notes mention a drawing of the subject by Raymond LaFage, sold Monaco, Christie's, 20 June 1992, lot 219.  Such scenes from Roman history were popular with Roman 17th-century artists.

Francesco Chiozzi was a painter and priest living in Casalmaggiore in the 18th century.  It is unlikely that this drawing is by him but perhaps it passed through his hands.  It seems more likely to be by an artist in the circle of Pietro da Cortona.
