Catalogue Note
This drawing, so characteristic of Piola's style, must have been intended for the decoration of the cornice of a room in a palace. The oval scenes show Mercury and Argus and Diana and Endymion. Ralph Holland proposed, in the 1974 exhibition catalogue, that this might have been intended for a bedroom as the mythological subjects relate to sleep.
