bears inscription in pen and brown ink: B

Provenance

With P & D Colnaghi, London, from whom purchased, April 1964 (as Italian, late 16th Century)

Condition

Laid down. There are some nicks to the upper edge of the sheet and a loss to the upper left quarter. An old crease runs the width of the sheet just above Moses' head and there are some losses to the left side of this. The white heightening is showing signs of oxidation in places but the pen and wash are still fresh throughout.

Catalogue Note

As rightly suggested by Mr. Holland, this drawing must have been for part of an architectural decoration.  It has not been possible to find a connection but Lilio was active in several important decorative schemes in Rome at the end of the sixteenth century.
