Catalogue Note
The Garden of Pan (National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne) was begun in 1876 but not complete until 1887. It depicts the sylvan god Pan playing his pipes in a wild rolling landscape similar to those found in the paintings of Bellini and Piero di Cosimo. The present drawing is for the male figure of one of the naked lovers who are listening to Pan's music on the banks of a stream.
