Catalogue Note
Ghezzi's caricatures, of which this is a typical example, range over all levels of society from noblemen to clerics to servants. Here the Duke's lackey is carrying his own bedroll on which he would probably sleep outside his master's door. The only reference to a Duke of Matalona seems to be in Casanova's memoirs in which he recounts that the Duke furnished an elegant apartment for his mistress, who happened to be Casanova's daughter, Leonilda.
