Catalogue Note

It is plausible, as Ralph Holland suggested in the 1982 exhibition, that this is a study for the head of a putto for the vaulted ceiling of the Treasury Sacristy in the Basilica of the Santa Casa, Loreto, painted between 1605 and 1610.  In the centre of each lower margin of the vault Roncalli repeated four times, in golden grisaille panels, two putti flanking a decorative cartouche.  The present finished study is probably related to the putto on the left, gazing up to the vault.
