Catalogue Note

Hamilton was sent to Egypt by the Earl of Elgin, whom he had served as secretary in Constantinople. Together with Edward Clarke and a member of the British Mission attached to the Turkish army, he attempted to prevent the removal of antiquities taken by the French (notably the Rosetta Stone). He also superintended the safe transportation to England of the Elgin Marbles. This work describes his journey to Upper Egypt with William Leake and Charles Hayes in October 1801.
