Catalogue Note
Hay was one of the pioneers of Egyptology and financed many early excavations in Egypt. He spent several winters between 1828 and 1836 living in a tomb in Thebes, excavating tombs, drawing, cataloguing and recording finds and employing a group of draughtsmen and artists, including Edward Lane. His collection of antiquities was sold in 1865, for the most part divided between the British Museum and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
