Catalogue Note

Edwin J. Davis was English Episcopal chaplain at Alexandria from 1861 and later chaplain to the Bishop of Jerusalem around 1887. Included in this sketchbook are views of Alexandretta, Budrum, and Adana, together with classical remains, artefacts, contemporary details of street scenes and a map of southern Asia Minor after observations by Rev. Montgomery of the American Mission at Marash. Most of the drawings are accompanied by descriptive captions by the artist and several were reproduced in Davis's published account of his journey, Life in Asiatic Turkey (London, 1875).
