Catalogue Note
“The Tremiti islands, or Diomedae insulae, in the Adriatic were placed under the protection of the Order of the Lateran Canons by Pope Gregory XII. The fortress of San Nicola was attacked by the Turks in 1567. The frontispiece is in the form of an icon, with the central figure of St. Mary hovering over the fortress of San Nicola, and with small scenes connected with the history of the islands on both sides” (Atabey)
