Catalogue Note

The attribution of these drawings has been made partly on stylistic grounds and partly on the grounds that this collection came from a larger set of drawings bearing the artist's signature. The watercolours depict figures from the Ottoman court dressed in 'contemporary' costume, as opposed to the traditional dress more commonly represented in works on costume.

Brocktorff was based in Malta from around 1809 and worked there as an artist and printer-lithographer.
