Catalogue Note

“The present work was to have been the third of three monographs on ancient Mexico based on Waldeck’s twelve-year residence in that country… but in the event this volume appeared first, and hurriedly, in order to forestall piracy of Waldeck’s drawings and notes, a large quantity of which had been confiscated by the Mexican authorities prior to his departure for Europe” (BAL RIBA). Waldeck’s work was supported by Edward King, Viscount Kingsborough, author of the nine-volume, Antiquities of Mexico (1830-1848).
