Catalogue Note

A superb copy. Pietro Santi Bartoli (c.1635-1700), called “Il Perugino” after his birthplace of Perugia, studied painting under Poussin, later abandoning the art in favour of etching and engraving, chiefly classical and architectural subjects. The present collection includes depictions of frescoes, ceilings and architectural studies of Roman buildings.

Copies with the plates in two states are rare. Only one other, the Abdy-Peyrefitte copy, has been traced at auction.
