Catalogue Note
Newton was vice-consul in the Levant between 1852 and 1859. The British government expedition to Asia Minor was made in 1856 to 1859 under Newton’s direction. It was mostly concerned with the excavations of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (Budrum), one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and other sites along the coast of Asia Minor and was sponsored by Stratford Canning, the British ambassador at Constantinople. The text to this work was published in octavo in two parts, 1862-1863, but is not present here.
