Catalogue Note
COLOMBIAN CHARM
Emeralds were unearthed as early as 2000 BC from the Cleopatra’s mines in Egypt, but it was not until the 16th century that these beguiling green gems were introduced to Europe, when the conquering Spaniards took an immense quantity of emerald from Peru and Colombia back to their homeland. These treasures were quick to gain popularity for their exceptional qualities, especially the rich saturated green colour that was never seen before by Europeans. Today, Colombia is recognized as the source for the world’s most sought-after emeralds.
Colombian emeralds exhibit a soft, beautiful bluish green colour without traces of greyishness. Yet their colour-causing elements, chromium and vanadium, induce stress during crystallization, causing inclusions so common and unavoidable that are forgiven by gem connoisseurs. Therefore, emeralds treated with oil to mask such imperfections are also widely accepted in the trade nowadays.
This 15.22-carat emerald presents a striking balance of natural Colombian produce between refined green colour and exceptional clarity, even more notable is the absence of any oil enhancement in this natural beauty of astounding size. A Colombian emerald combining these significant attributes is of no doubt the utmost dream of every discerning collector.
