Condition

Slightly reduced. Old lining. Linen backing for support on reverse. Restoration throughout. Patch in sky area above central figure. Upper and lower selvage replaced. Silks somewhat dry. Good quality. Lighter than catalogue image.

Catalogue Note

Though classical sources describe Hercules slaying the Nemean lion alone, mythological depictions from the 14th century through the Renaissance relied heavily on Giovanni Boccaccio's Genealogia deorum, which describes Hercules, having cast his club aside, wrestling the Nemean lion, another lion already dead lying beside them, and a third lurking in the background. Here the abandoned weapon is a sword.
