Catalogue Note
The subject of this weaving is an episode from the late 16th century Italian epic poem by Torquato Tasso, Jerusalem Delivered, a fictive account of the First Crusade. In this scene, Sophronia and her suitor Olindo are bound to a stake at the far right to be burned to death, having falsely confessed to a theft from a mosque in an attempt to sacrifice themselves and save their Christian breathren from the wrath of the Muslim king, Aladdin. Clorinda, a Muslim warrior and daughter of the King of Ethiopia, arrives just as the flame is to be lit and intervenes on their behalf, pledging her military assistance in exchange for the couple's lives.
Tasso's poem inspired the production of a number of tapestry series including a set designed by Simon Vouet woven at the Paris workshop of Raphaël de la Planche in 1633.
