Description
- porcelain
realistically modelled resting on its haunches with bushy tail curling around the side, the front legs stiff, wearing a gilt bell on a red ribbon around the neck, the face with up-turned eyes, short snout and protruding pink tongue
Condition
The left side of the dog's snout has been restored, and there is a repair to a break in the tail. There is also an area of restoration to the back left foot and to the left side of the front right foot. There is also a chip to the tongue.There is some areas of loss to the iron-red enamel throughout the body.

A related pair of pug dogs is illustrated in William R.Sargent, The Copeland Collection. Chinese and Japanese Ceramic Figures, Salem, 1991, pl. 92, where the author notes that the model was based upon a Meissen original by J.J. Kandler around 1741-45 (see p. 189).
