Description
- textile
of rectangular form and vertically orientated, finely woven with a central panel of a pair of cranes in flight between two confronted pavilions, all reserved on a ground of meandering floral scrolls, framed by lishui polychrome borders, with a five-character inscription within a rectangular cartouche at the top reading Zhonghe Dian beiyong (Reserved for imperial use in the Hall of Central Harmony)
Condition
Silk pile and metal thread wrapped flatweave.
Metal thread flatwoven field generally in good condition; some very slight losses to metal thread wrapping but overall sound. Good dense pile overall c 3-4 mm, with no noticeable areas of wear. Original side cords, original end finishes including almost complete fringes. There is one area half way up left hand side with a whitish mark, irregularly shaped, approx. 13 cm x 5 cm. The area is stiff and the pile is impacted and stuck together. We do not know if this area would clean successfully, but might be able to be improved. Overall the carpet would benefit from a thorough professional clean as it appears to be quite dirty (probably atmospheric dirt as does not appear to have been walked on, and has a hanging casing stitched along top edge, which suggests is has probably always been hung). Once cleaned the colours should freshen. Good flexible handle, overall in very good condition.
