Description
- soapstone
carved seated with the right leg raised, dressed in long flowing robes falling into voluminous folds over her hands on her raised knee, the robes finely incised with scrolling clouds and hemmed with foliate borders, the benevolent face below a high chignon draped over by a hood, the opaque stone of a beige tone with darker inclusions and traces of pigment, all supported on a rocky base
Condition
The guanyin has a triangular section of the bottom hem of her robe (8.5 x 2.5cm) broken and repaired. There is overall nibbling along the extremities, such as the edges of the guanyin's hood and robes. There are small nicks to the carving, including one measuring 0.8 x 0.8cm to the reverse of the figure and a 0.2 x 0.2cm loss to one corner of the robe. The paint to the hair and face is lightly rubbed. There are natural veining running across the surface, such as that running from the vase up the figure's chest, another across the crossed leg, and others to the reverse of the figure. The figure is attached to the stand via a large metal pin. The stand is probably added later. The stones are of a warmer beige tone compared to the catalogue illustration.
