the rounded sides rising from a straight foot to a flared rim, decorated to the exterior with five phoenix roundels with wings outstretched and their tails curled underneath, the interior with one further roundel in the centre, inscribed at the base with a six-character seal mark in underglaze blue

Condition

With the phoenix to the interior of the bowl facing upright, a 10 x 6cm section had been broken from the bowl and restuck (1 to 4 o'clock position) , with associated restored rim chips (largest measuring 1.8 x 0.3cm). There are two further restored rim chips, one at 6 o'clock position (0.8 x 0.5cm) and the other at 7 o'clock position (0.8 x 0.3cm). The latter rim chip is associated with a 2cm hairline crack at the rim. The rim is very lightly ground down. There are general surface wear and minor firing imperfections such as iron-spots and burst glaze bubbles.
