each with a domed cover delicately moulded in the form of a four-layered chrysanthemum flower with fifty-six petals forming a lobed rim, the rounded sides and spreading foot similarly decorated, covered overall in bright red lacquer, the base lacquered black

Condition

The pair of boxes and covers have been restored, with areas of re-lacquer across the surface including the base and the interior. Other minor cracks are visible under the areas of re-lacquer, particularly around the rims and the foot. There are also minor chips to the extremities and surface wear to the lacquer. One cover has an area of minor depression on one side, with an associated crack running along half of the rim of the central chrysanthemum floret (visible both to the interior and exterior). One box has a small chip measuring 0.8 x 0.2cm and other small chips along the rim. The interior also has a 0.2cm loss to one of the raised ridges of the fluted sides.
