the animal carved standing foursquare, its head turned back and its trunk curled between its tusks, caparisoned with a long tasselled saddle rug woven with clouds and a crane, the back surmounted by two boys holding a brush crouching over a basin with water gushing down the side, another small boy attending at the front carrying a vase with a halberd and a qing, the stone of a translucent white tone with russet-brown veining

Condition
The carving is in excellent condition with the exception of very minor nibbling along the extremities such as the nail tips on the elephant paws, the tip of the tusks and the tail. There are natural flaws and russet veining to the stone running diagonally to the front of the elephant (longest approx. 8cm), and shorter horizontal veins running across the rear haunch of the elephant to the reverse. The stone is of a slightly warmer tone compared to the catalogue illustration.
