Description

carved on the cover in deep relief with a scene of the 'Eighteen Luohans' riding mythical beasts and bearing precious objects against swirling waves, within a lobed panel enclosed by clouds and 'The Four Heavenly Kings' (Si Da Tian Wang) at the corners, all within a key-fret border, the reverse with an immortal riding a tiger and another a dragon above billows of clouds, the box opening to reveal on the interior a lively scene depicting the arrival of the 'Eight Immortals' and attendants to the palace of Xiwangmu on Mount Kulun, the Queen Mother of the West holding court among storeyed pavilions scattered with pine trees, wutong and palms, the base incised with a spurious Qianlong seal mark, the ivory patinated to a pale yellow colour

Condition

There is a little minor loss to the corners and light stains overall, but otherwise the box and cover are in extremely good condition. The carving is remarkably well preserved.

Catalogue Note

The intricate and delicately fine carving of this box and cover is especially worth noting. It is comparable to an ivory box of similar fan-shape, sold in these rooms, 22nd May 1985, lot 276, carved in high relief with warriors mounted on various mythical beasts amongst clouds in a large central lobed panel enclosed by clouds.
