Description

  • Virgin and Child enthroned
  • silvered and polychromed limewood
  • German, probably Swabia, circa 1420-1430

Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good, with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is craquelure to the polychromy throughout and some of the polychromy may be refreshed, including the flesh tones. There are losses to the polychromy, particularly to the Virgin's drapery at the bottom, on the proper right side, and to the throne. The crown is carved separately and may be reattached. There are small losses to the pinnacles on the crown. There is stable splitting to the wood, consistent with the material. A section of the ground below the Virgin's feet appears to be reattached. There are a few small inserts and pins to the back. The base is carved separately and may be associated.
