Condition

Overall the condition of the casket is good. There is some minor wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age, with some replaced tesserae. There are some minor restorations to the lid of the box, in particular including to the top and all of the corners here. There are minor chips, including to the right hand corners of the lid and the right hand corner on the front of the lower edge. The bone edge of the rear left bottom corner may be replaced. The hinge is slightly loose. There are a few wormholes on the underside consistent with material. The inside is lined with red velvet and the underside was painted black. The key and lock still function.

Catalogue Note

The Embriachi workshop was founded by Baldassare degli Embriachi in Venice in the early 15th century. It specialised in caskets which consist of wood carcases mounted with small reliefs of ivory or cow bone and certosina word borders.
