Condition
Overall the condition is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are a few small losses to the wood, including to the locks of hair on the top of the head, to the tip of the strand of hair falling down her back, and to the falling folds of drapery. The back right corner of the base is reattached. There is some stable splitting consistent with the material, including down the lower back and buttock, to the abdomen on the proper right side, and to the left side of the chest. The proper left arm is carved separately, and a joint is slightly visible at the top. There are a few knots to the wood. The figure may have been reattached to the base.

Catalogue Note
The pose of this charming wood figure of Callisto, the goddess Diana's nymph who conceived a child with Jupiter, is derived from the famous Callipygian Venus in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples (inv. no. 6020). Her identity as Callisto is indicated by her swollen belly, which she reveals by lifting her drapery. Fruitwood and boxwood carvings of this type were much sought after in 17th-century Germany.
