Catalogue Note

Alvaro e Correnti, founded in Messina by Pippo Alvaro and Alfredo Correnti, is celebrated for its unique creations and regard for the past. The backing of the sapphire intaglio by a gold impression of an ancient intaglio is reminiscent of the rings made for Abraham van Goorle (1549-1608). One ring illustrated in his Dactyliotheca seu Annulorum Sigillarium ... (Leiden, 1609, pl. 111) shows a double portrait of Nero and Agrippina in gold mounted behind an intaglio.
