Condition

Overall the condition of the ring is good. There is some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age and handling. There is some rubbing to the gold. The bezel is slightly tilted on the hoop. One of the short edges of the bezel is open. There are abrasions to the edges of the stone. One of the trapezoids on the shoulders is of a different shape than the other.

Catalogue Note

The tart mould ring is named for the shape of the underside of the bezel. The form is meant to mimic the natural crystalline shape of the gems it holds. A similar ring is illustrated in A. B. Chadour, Rings. The Alice and Louis Koch collection, Leeds, 1994, vol. 1, p. 170, fig. 560.
