Condition
The canvas has not been lined. There is a pattern of fine craquelure overall, and a small dent in the canvas with a spot of associated paint flaking below the signature near the lower framing edge. Ultraviolet light reveals strokes of retouching primarily in the background and the dark blue pigments of the figure's clothing, however as the old varnish fluoresces opaquely it is just possible that there could be further signs of retouching which are not apparent under U.V. light. The painting's appearance could be greatly improved with a surface clean to address the old varnish and surface dirt.
Held in a decorative silver-painted frame.
