Provenance

Sale: Christie's, New York, 29 October 1986, lot 73 (as Paul Louis Bouchard)

Condition

The canvas has an old relining. There is a pattern of fine craquelure visible primarily in the figure's white coats and her face. Ultraviolet light reveals some small spots of retouching chiefly to the figure, notably a small spot below her right eye, a spot above and a horizontal intermittent line below her right hand (these have discoloured and are visible to the naked eye), and in the pleat of her white shawl. The varnish fluoresces especially opaquely over the background, and it is just possible that there are a number of retouchings in this area which do not fluoresce visibly under ultraviolet light. Held in a decorative gilt frame.
