Description

  • Wilhelm Kuhnert
  • Im Versteck (The Lions' Den)
  • signed Wilh. Kuhnert lower right; signed and titled Wilhelm Kuhnert / "Im Versteck" on the stretcher
  • oil on canvas
  • 39 by 66.5cm., 15¼ by 26¼in.

Provenance

Galerie Commeter, Hamburg (no. 1379)
A gift from the uncle of the present owner to his father circa 1948

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. As just visible in the catalogue illustration there is a tiny spot of paint flaking in the sunlit part of the lioness's head, which is minor and not visually distracting. Ultraviolet light reveals an even and quite thick varnish layer, and the only visible retouchings are a small circa 2 by 0.5cm restoration in the ground near the lower left corner, and a few tiny pinhead-sized spots in the background. This painting is in very good condition. Held in a simple frame.

Catalogue Note

According to Dr Grettmann-Werner, the present work was painted circa 1907-10, between Kuhnert's second and third expeditions to Africa.
