Description

  • Alexander Koester
  • Sechs Enten (Six Ducks)
  • signed A KOESTER lower right
  • oil on canvas
  • 72 by 118cm., 28½ by 46½in.

Provenance

Acquired by the grandfather of the present owner in the Netherlands

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There are some small areas of fluorescence under ultraviolet light, which certainly appear to be related to unevenness in the varnish rather than any retouching. Fine lines of craquelure are visible under close inspection notably in the ducks, and there are some small scattered spots of paint loss, notably a minor (circa 0.5 by 0.5cm) loss in the head of the duck third from the right and some tiny spots in the head of the second from the left, a few spots in the water below the signature, and a thin, faint circa 5cm scuff in the water below the third duck from the right. There is a layer of surface dirt and the painting could benefit from a surface clean. Held in a decorative gilt frame.
