Condition

This painting is in good condition, and is ready to hang. The canvas has not been lined. There is a pattern of faint craquelure visible chiefly in the sky. Ultraviolet light reveals some signs of retouching which are relatively minor for a painting of this size, notably an area above the distant trees in the left third of the composition, a smaller area in the water just above the third of the near trees from the left (patched on the reverse), and some scattered spots and minor strokes of retouching in the sky and near the lighthouse. The varnish fluoresces more opaquely over the land in parts of the lower half of the composition, however this is unlikely to conceal any notable retouching. Held in a coved and fluted neoclassical-style frame, with leaf and berry ornaments.
