Estimate

Description
- Jules Dupré
- Les Baigneuses
- signed and dated Jules Dupré / 1836 lower left
- oil on canvas
- 25 by 33cm., 9¾ by 13in.
Provenance
Mary Lee Fairbanks, née Epling (wife of the Hollywood actor, naval officer and diplomat Douglas Fairbanks Jr), Palm Beach and New York; thence by descent to the present owners, great granchildren of the above
Condition
The canvas has not been lined. There is a pattern of faint hairline craquelure visible primarily in the sky. Ultraviolet light reveals a 4cm diagonal line of restoration above the seated bathers, some small spots of retouching along the left and right framing edges, and the old varnish fluoresces opaquely, obscuring a clear reading of the surface. The overall condition of the work is good and its apperance could be greatly improved with a surface clean.
Held in a decorative gilt frame.
