Condition

The canvas has been relined. Ultraviolet light reveals some very minor spots of retouching chiefly in the upper-left quadrant in the sky. There is some slight thinness in the paint surface in parts possibly related to previous cleaning. This painting is in good condition, clean and ready to hang. Held in a decorative rococo-style gilt frame.

Painted circa 1850-60, the present work is one of a number of canvases that Corot painted of Gouvieux at this time, see: Robaut, no. 886 for a similar view, and nos 884, 885 and 888 for variations on the same theme.
