  • Woman by the Sea
  • signed and dated J Malczewski / 1915 upper right
  • oil on canvasboard
  • 102 by 72cm., 40¼ by 28¼in.

Provenance

Poliksena Chilaiditi (the sitter); thence by descent

Condition

The canvasboard has been laid down and tacked at the extreme edges, most probably by the artist, and is flat and even and ensuring a stable support. Ultraviolet light reveals some strokes of retouching to the waves in the background to the left of the figure's bouquet and some minor strokes to the right of her. There is a tiny spot of paint flaking in the sky in the upper right, and areas of surface dirt which could be addressed with a surface clean. Held in a simple gilt frame.
