Description
- Michael Zeno Diemer
- Sailing on the Bosphorus
- signed M. Zeno Diemer lower left
- oil on canvas
- 110 by 144.5cm., 43ΒΌ by 57in.
Provenance
Private collection, Switzerland (by the 1930s)
Condition
The canvas has not been lined. Apart from some localised fine lines of craquelure visible under close inspection chiefly in the ship's sails, the overall appearance of this work is good, and it is ready to hang.
Ultraviolet light reveals scattered spots and some areas of retouching in the sky, some just visible to the naked eye, notably strokes to the right of the main ship's sails, an area circa 9 by 9cm to the upper-left of the sails and another circa 11 by 5cm in the sky above and between the mosques (both with adhesive related to repairs on the reverse), and intermittent strokes along the upper framing edge. There are virtually no visible signs of retouching in the composition below the horizon.
Held in a decorative gilt frame.
