Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There are approximately six scattered small spots of paint flaking, the largest circa 1.5cm wide and visible in the catalogue illustration below the seated man in the lower left. Ultraviolet light reveals scattered signs of old retouching, notably to a circa 3 by 4cm area of restoration in the background between the head of the camel and the veil (patched on the reverse), areas in the rightmost quarter of the sky, strokes in the centre of the extreme lower edge, a minor line in the chin of the dancer, and scattered small areas in the figures' clothes. This painting is overall in good condition, and its appearance could be further enhanced if desired with a light surface clean. Held in an elaborate gilt frame, with foliate motifs. The catalogue illustration is overall accurate, although there is more colour in the sky in reality.
