Provenance

Sale: Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Chicago, 24 February 2008, lot 18
Purchased at the above sale by the present owner

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There are some lines of faint horizontal craquelure primarily in the lower part of the sky. Ultraviolet light reveals retouching related to three interlocking repaired tears in a circa 14 by 12cm area in the upper left quadrant of the sky (patched on the reverse), and some very minor further scattered spots. There are spots of fluorescence in the lower part of the sky which appear to relate to the artist's original pigments and not retouching. Overall this painting is in good condition and ready to hang. Held in a decorative gilt frame. The catalogue illustration is overall a good representation of the painting.
