Provenance

Sale: Sotheby's, London, 31 October 1996, lot 74
Purchased at the above sale by the present owner

Condition

The canvas has been relined. There is a minor 1cm line of craquelure in the cat in the lower right which could benefit from consolidation. Ultraviolet light reveals quite extensive strokes of retouching in the dark background, and more minor scattered strokes of cosmetic retouching in the boy, animals, and pot. The overall appearance of the work is good and it is ready to hang. Held in a decorative gilt frame. The colours have slightly less of an orange cast to them than in the catalogue illustration, and the light pigments are somewhat brighter.
