Condition

The canvas has an old relining. There are some faint minor lines of craquelure which are not particularly visually distracting, and light horizontal stretcher marks corresponding to the upper and lower stretcher bars. Ultraviolet light reveals a number of localised restorations, notably a circa 5 by 6cm area in the back of the central boy, in the left knee of the boy in the sailor suit (circa 6 by 4cm) and in his face, in the knees of the boy to the left of him, in the shin of the boy looking in the box in the middle-ground to the right, and some further scattered strokes and small areas. The overall appearance of the work is good and it is ready to hang. Held in a decorative gilt frame, with oak leaf and acorn motifs. The catalogue illustration is overall quite an accurate representation of the painting.
