Condition

The canvas has not been lined and is somewhat slack on its stretcher. There is a light horizontal stretcher mark corresponding to the central stretcher bar. Ultraviolet light reveals some quite extensive areas of retouching, notably a circa 70 by 20cm area from the sole of the figure's foot and background to the top of her back, a circa 7 by 9cm area in her right thigh (patched on the reverse), a circa 7 by 4cm area in the background in the upper left quadrant (also patched), a circa 30 by 24cm area in the wave above the figure's back, and strokes along the right framing edge. As visible in the catalogue illustration, there are some areas of varnish which have yellowed over time. Held in a decorative gilt frame with a dark green-painted inner accent. The catalogue illustration is reasonably accurate, although the figure's skin pigments are slightly warmer in reality.
