Description

  • Jan Jacob Spohler
  • Wood gatherers on a snowy path
  • signed and dated JJ Spohler 65 lower left
  • oil on panel
  • 73 by 102.5cm., 28¾ by 40¼in.

Provenance

Acquired by the present owner in the 1970s

Condition

The panel is flat and even and ensuring a stable support. Ultraviolet light reveals just a couple of tiny scattered spots of retouching, and there are areas where traces of the old residual varnish over parts of the trees and land fluoresce an opaque green, obscuring a clear reading of the surface under U.V. light, however there does not appear to be any notable retouching in these areas. This painting is in very good, virtually original condition, and ready to hang. Held in a decorative gilt frame. The colours are brighter and less heavy overall than in the catalogue illustration, with somewhat less of a yellow-orange cast.
