Catalogue Note

The earliest recorded surviving negative of one of the Liddell sisters.

This image probably dates from the photographic session that Carroll refers to in his diary entry for 2 June 1857. 'Bought some Collodion," he wrote, '...and spent the morning at the Deanery... the two dear little girls, Ina and Alice, were there with me all the morning. To try the lens, I took a picture of myself, for which Ina took off the cap, and of course considered it all her doing!'

Two prints from this negative are recorded. These comprise one print in the Liddell family album (see Sotheby's, 'Lewis Carroll's Alice', 6 June 2001, lot 32, plate 35) and one print in the M.L. Parrish collection, Princeton University.
