Catalogue Note

Dickens had secured a post in the Treasury for his younger brother Frederick (1820-68) in 1839 and maintained a keen interest in his welfare, as in this letter when he attempts to allay his brother's concern about Lord Melbourne's replacement by Robert Peel as Prime Minister. Sadly, Frederick's later life was marred by debt and alcoholism and he died at the age of 48. LETTERS BY DICKENS TO HIS SIBLINGS ARE UNCOMMON AT AUCTION.
